FAQs
You will probably find that most of your queries are answered in other areas of this website – in particular, the terms and conditions and entry guidelines documents.
We will keep updating this FAQ document as people ask questions.
What are the Jerwood Moving Image Awards?
These new awards will celebrate and reward artists in the early stages of the careers working in digital moving image. An independent panel of judges will undertake a rigorous and artistically focussed selection process, leading to up to 30 pieces of work being presented on a dedicated website. A shortlist of work by up to eight artists will be exhibited at the Jerwood Space in London in 2008. Three winners will be selected from the shortlist, with each being awarded a prize of £10,000.
There will be a public vote where people will be invited to vote on their choice of work. The winner of this public vote will be featured on the website. No prize will be awarded.
What is digital moving image?
We are using the term digital moving image to describe the range of artists’ practice with the moving image. Generally we are using it to refer to work made within the context of contemporary art as opposed to work made under the context of mainstream cinema or television. Please refer to the entry guidelines for a more detailed definition.
What do you mean by 'emerging' ?
The Jerwood Charitable Foundation’s ethos is to support artists in the early stage of their careers. In the world of digital moving image, we recognise that different routes of development may be taken. We are therefore looking for applicants who have either graduated from a recognised 'arts' training institution in the last 10 years or who first exhibited digital moving image professionally in last 10 years.
How do I enter?
You enter the Jerwood Moving Image Awards through the website www.jerwoodmovingimage.org. On the website you will find entry guidelines, terms and conditions and a submission form for you to fill in. There are clear instructions to guide you through the process, as well as instructions on how to upload your moving image work onto the site.
Can I submit more than one piece of work?
No. Only one entry per applicant is eligible.
Is interactive (online work) eligible?
No, only linear work is eligible. Applicants must submit one linear piece of moving image work lasting between 1 and 10 minutes.
What happens to my entry once it has been posted online?
Once you have uploaded your application you will receive a confirmation email.
Your application will be kept in a secure area of the site for the judges to view and consider.
We will contact you by email in January 2008 to let you know whether or not you have been successful.
Thirty applications will be chosen to go through to the next stage. These 30 works will then be publicly visible on the website.
If you are unsuccessful, we will let you know but unfortunately will not be to give individual feedback on your application.
If I am unsuccessful, can I get feedback?
Unfortunately, due to the high volume of applications we are expecting, we will not be able to give individual feedback on your application.
What do I do if I have problems uploading my entry?
There is an online feedback form that you can fill in with your technical queries. We will respond to you within 48 hours. You will not be able to upload your work after 8am on Monday 3 December, so please allow yourself plenty of time to ensure your work is uploaded successfully.
Why has my application failed to upload?
You may not have filled in all the fields on the application form and your work may not fit all the technical requirements. Please double check all these details carefully before trying again.
What Video Formats can I upload?
We will try to process most video formats from the web, your mobile phone or your digital video camera. Typically, your video file will have one of the following filename extensions:
.mov, .mpg, .dv, .mp4, .3gp, .asf, .wmv
We'll do our best to deal with these kinds of files, but sometimes a non-standard video will be rejected. The safest types to use are MP4 and 3GP.
How long will it take to upload?
Upload times are governed by your connection to the internet. The site requires a broadband connection because of the size of the typical video file.
Typical Upload Times:
| Your Upload Speed | Approx Time for 2MB |
| 384 kbps | 42 sec |
| 768 kbps | 21 sec |
| 1.54 Mbps | 11 sec |
